No Boxes

While my work is predominantly abstract or conceptual, it embraces a variety of styles and techniques. My primary reason: each message’s meaning revealed in a unique and fitting artistic expression.

I consciously choose to work without technical or stylistic constraints—No Boxes. I would like to stay in the ‘in between’. My goal is to embody the enrichment and liberation found in expressing oneself without limitations or constraints, advocating for artistic freedom, experimentation, diverse expression, and introspection.

I love a truly blank canvas. Completely white and open, without any framework or expectations in advance. Honouring my boundless creativity and embracing true artistic freedom. That is where my magic happens. Here are some reasons why.

Work: 'Opened'

The meaning is paramount in my work, creating art with a message. I reveal the meaning of each message separately in an ever-appropriate, unique craft and artistic expression. Every message carries its own style: from subtle and soft to bold and outspoken, from expressionist to pop art, from photograph to painted form. It all depends on what the message demands.

Art is the expression of my soul, an exploration of my mind, and a dialogue with the world. Limiting myself to a single style can stifle this expression. All my life, I wrote books, spoke my word, used pencils, sketched, designed… By allowing myself to create freely, I explore a wide range of emotions, ideas, and techniques. This freedom fosters a genuine and holistic expression of my inner world.

It may be because of my own experience that I am eager to avoid boxes above all. Environments place us too much in boxes (like in my case, the box of the disabled), which suppresses the identity, expression and disclosure of the individual and lurks exclusion.

Thereby, human experiences are multifaceted and complex, defying encapsulation in a single style. By diversifying my approach, I more accurately reflect the varied and nuanced nature of (my) life.

I am a lifelong learner. My work often emerges from blending different styles and ideas. Each collection or project develops its own unique style—sometimes colorful, other times black and white; at times rough and spontaneous, other times detailed and meticulous. Style evolves naturally during creation, shaped by what I wish to express.

Exploring different styles, mediums, and techniques keeps my creativity flexible and sharp. This ongoing experimentation and learning can lead to breakthroughs that might not be achievable within the confines of a single style.

For me, creating is deeply personal and should be fulfilling. Being a generalist all my life, the idea of choosing and sticking to one style drains my creativity. Exploring various styles is invigorating and joyful. Creation becomes an adventure, filled with discovery and excitement.

These are some reasons why I refuse to box myself or be boxed. I challenge the notion that mastery requires a singular recognizable style. I hope a never ‘reach’ a box.

Working without boxes is profoundly liberating and enriching. It allows for true artistic freedom, continuous growth, innovation, personal fulfillment, and breaking down barriers. I let my creativity flow freely, revealing the diversity of my expression. Embracing this richness through exploration of multiple styles breathes life into my creativity.
