Who would have thought that I would ever make a work that features a car?
Not me. I embrace nature.
This work confronted me with my own contradictions during the making.
This ‘Set off’ scene symbolizes for me the desire to explore the unknown and embrace spontaneity. Including the exciting moment with contradictory thoughts, just before you set off into a world of endless possibilities.
For me, the car represents much more than convenience or simply moving from A to B. It is a symbol of autonomy within the limitations imposed by my body. It symbolizes the possibility of escape into all elements that would otherwise seem unattainable.
In addition, there is the grandeur of nature. In which I would like to travel. The distorted color palette shows the contrast between nature and the vehicle, in which the need for mobility and independence can conflict with the vulnerability of the natural world.
In my mind I made it an electric car version anyway 😉 but it still captures this duality: the car, a vehicle of freedom and possibilities, contrasts with the silent grandeur of the natural environment. A scene that celebrates freedom without ignoring its costs.
A harmony between stillness and movement. And freedom and consistency.
