Having Your Back was created for a written series about the illusion of inclusion.
The title refers to something simple we often say to one another: I’ve got your back. But what does that really mean?
Inclusion is easy to claim. Support is easy to promise. The harder question is what happens when someone actually needs you to stand behind them. For me, that is also what inclusion asks of us: to look beyond what is obvious, to resist reducing people to a single label or characteristic, and to make room for the complexity of another person.
Having Your Back is about the difference between saying someone belongs and creating the conditions in which they can actually feel that they do.
